Remember the days of the Windows phone? Maybe you were one of the few who actually own one. Microsoft, Nokia, and HTC did very well in their design and usability, but they all shared one sad fault. Lack of a robust app store.

This famous icon was misjudged in the beginning by its own community. One could say, the difference from a personal computer and a smart phone is that you are not restricted to download applications only from the app store; you can download from the entire web.

Apple applied this concept of an app store as far back as widgets used to be a think to brag about. They eventually moved it to their mobile platform and then on to their desktop. This was fine for Apple to do since its users are already used to not having everything on the web downloadable to their Mac computers. Windows on the other hand, didn't much of an app store from their mobile 6.5 operating system, but you could download themes and games. The culture of the users of Windows PCs didn't have many limitations on what they can download and install.

I do not think it was Microsoft's intention to limit what programs can be installed, but it surely confused the most common user of Windows due to this new concept of an App store. Also we cannot forget that Windows introduce a whole new home set up for Windows 8 at the same time. This implementation could have been much smoother if there was a market somewhat a third of what it is today and if the Microsoft would had implemented with Windows 8.1.

In 2014 there was a total 140,000 apps to download in the Windows Store. Today, the app store filled with over 670,000 and constantly climbing. Very soon you can make physical hardware purchases like Microsoft's Surfaces. It was a bumpy start, but now their are more useful applications that are found on the app store, like spotify or even Ubuntu operation system. Maybe it's time to check out the Windows App Store.
